An Order of the Thistle Chain Link

London, 1st half of the 18th Century

18K yellow gold (750/-), tested. Hallmarks, Makers mark IE. Opaque red and white enamel, as well as translucent green enamel. Enamel damaged.

Circa 3 x 1.9 cm. Circa 22 g.

The design of the chain link is most likely a reference to the so-called Order of the Thistle. The order of the Thistle is an order of chivalry, associated with Scotland which was founded in 1687. The order ranks second in precedence of the British orders of chivalry, after the Order of the Garter. The symbol of the thistle appears as part of the orders coat of arms and is also one of the national symbols of Scotland.
