HEINRICH VON ZÜGEL

ANIMAL WELFARE

Along with Max Liebermann and Fritz von Uhde, Heinrich von Zügel is considered one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism. The painter became particularly famous for his depictions of native animals, especially cattle, sheep and donkeys.

Zügel was born in 1850 in Murrhardt in Baden-Württemberg. He trained as an animal and genre painter from 1867 at the Stuttgart Art School as a student of Bernhard von Neher and Heinrich von Rustige. Two years later Zügel moved to Munich to the academy, where he maintained lively exchanges with the animal painter Anton Braith and with Gotthard Kuehl. Sometimes humorous and pointed, Zügel depicts farm animals and domestic animals with their keepers and guardians.

The high moorland landscape near Dachau became a favorite motif of the painter from the early 1880s, against whose backdrop he freely arranged the animals. Trips to Holland and the Belgian coast in the early 1890s provided the artist with important impulses for light painting in the tradition of the Impressionists. Zügel's painting style became increasingly loosened up and the detail subordinated in favor of the overall impression of the picture.

In 1894 and 1895 Zügel was a professor at the Karlsruhe Academy. This was followed by his appointment to the Academy in Munich, where he worked until 1922. He received numerous honors, among them the Knight's Cross of the Bavarian Crown in 1907, combined with elevation to the rank of personal nobility.

MUNICH COWBOY

In the winter months of 1877 - 1880, the painters August Holmberg, Conrad Reinherz, Heinrich Zügel, Ernst Zimmermann and Rath Paulus (secretary of the Munich Artists' Association) met on Mondays in Victor Sieger's studio for a joint pistol shooting session.

There is a "Schussprtocoll" which was provided by the same with drawings. With numerous humorous depictions, the artists make fun of each other.

Of particular interest is a portrait of the young Heinrich (von) Zügel, who is referred to as "Unser Ober-HerrSchützenmeister" and the study after three injured fingers of his right hand ("This is the hand of the Thiermaler Zügel"), which are depicted on another protocol together with collected bruises of the artist colleagues.
