description:

Battaglioli, Francesco

1714 Modena - nach 1796 Venedig

An Architectural Capriccio with Figure Scenery

Oil on canvas. 88 x 136.5 cm. Doubled. Restored. Minor damage to frame.

Francesco Battglioli, student of Antonio Joli (1700 Modena - 1777 Naples) followed his teacher to Venice in 1737. There he painted architectural capriccios and vedute, which in perspective and their diffuse lighting strongly remind of Giovanni Antonio Canal. He also worked as a stage designer for the theatre, including the Teatro di San Cassiano, Venice.

For this painting there is a statement from Rodolfo Pallucchini, Venice, March 31, 1973, in which he has classified the painting as an early work of Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto.

According to the current state of research on Canalettos early work, of the original 27 works mentioned by Pallucchini, ten have been attributed to other artists, including this painting by Francesco Battaglioli.

Expertise by Dr. Bozena Anna Kowalczyk, Venice, March 11, 2019. The painting is dated around 1745-50.

Provenance: Italian private collection
