River Landscape with resting Peasants, in the background Fort Saint-Jean and the Château de Pierre-Scize, Lyon

Signed lower centre. Oil on canvas. 89.9 x 104.2 cm. Framed.

This river landscape has been regarded as an Italian landscape for a long time. In 2008 Frits Duparc identified it as a view of Lyon with the Château de Pierre-Scize in the north and the Fort Saint-Jean fortress. Nevertheless, a strong Italian influence can be observed in the use of light and in the exquisite representation of the figures, reminiscent of the Roman bamboccianti. It can therefore be assumed that Lingelbach did not create the painting using a French subject until 1650 after his return to Amsterdam.
