In his art, Marc Chagall combines elements from Russian folk art, Jewish mysticism and old legends, but also creates scenes that are combined with dream images. There are often recurring motifs in his oeuvre, such as the lovers, the crescent moon, the cockerel or the Jewish shtetl.

In addition to paintings, he created extensive etching cycles and numerous lithographic works. In the years 1950-1970, Marc Chagall also worked on numerous commissions for public buildings. He designed stained glass windows for the cathedrals of Metz and Notre-Dame in Reims, the synagogue of the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem and St Stephens Church in Mainz. From 1963, he painted a large-format ceiling painting in the dome above the auditorium of the Opéra Garnier in Paris, and from 1964 he painted murals for the Metropolitan Opera in New York. In 1941, Chagall decided to emigrate to the USA. A first comprehensive retrospective of his works was shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1946. In 1947, after the end of the Second World War, the artist returned to Paris and finally settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in 1950, where he died on 28 March 1985.
