Estate stamp verso. Oil on paper mounted on canvas. 29.5 x 23.3 cm. Restored. Minor damage. Minor damage to frame (38 x 32 cm).

Inscribed on the stretcher. Adhesive label "Eigentümer K. Loreck Major a. D." (artists nephew) numbered 6 on the stretcher. Further handwritten numbers and old adhesive label with number 26. Adhesive label with number 21 on the stretcher and on the frame verso, also a newer number 10. Adhesive label from the Hasenkamp shipping company, Spitzweg exhibition [1985] with number 37 on the frame verso.

Cf. Roennefahrt, Günther, Carl Spitzweg. Beschreibendes Verzeichnis seiner Gemälde, Ölstudien und Aquarelle. Munich 1960, page 287, Catalogue Raisonée number 1355 "Der Antiquar" (with illustration): apparently an illustration of the present painting. However, the information on the technique and dimensions differs: "Ölskizze auf Z[igarrenkisten].-Holz, 32 x 24 cm" (oil sketch on cigar box panel, 32 x 24 cm) with the information "rücks. signiert" (signed verso). Reference to the Spitzweg exhibition in the Thannhauser gallery in Munich, September 1916, catalogue 66. Roennefahrts statement "Privatbesitz in Wuppertal" (private owner, Wuppertal) is also incorrect.
