Landscape with Carriage and Figures

Signed lower right with an S in a rhombus (restored). Oil on paper on panel. 18.4 x 31.5 cm. Restored. Frame slightly damaged.

Right from his early career, Carl Spitzweg concerned himself with the motif of the stagecoach. Whilst at first the coach took a central role within the image (for example in the painting "The Arrival of the Stagecoach" from the late 1850s, see Wichmann Cat. Rais. No. 866), in his later paintings it moves ever further into the distance. The carriage portrayed in the present painting occupies the middle ground, shown moving off towards the horizon, followed by several figures. In such works Spitzwegs Landscapes portray scenes already confined to history, evoking romanticised memories of a bygone era. This theme is carried throughout the image, noticeable also in the "old-fashioned" clothing worn by the couple in the foreground.
