A Jumping Deer with Hunting Dog as a Drinking Vessel

Historicism

Silver, partly gold-plated, hammered, chased and cast. Eyes set with rock crystal. A stag jumping over a hunting dog, on an oval terracotta base decorated with various creatures, such as a lizard, turtle, snake, snails and beetles. The stag wears a collar decorated with arabesques, adorned by a cartouche with an eglomised coat of arms. Hallmarks on base plate and neck (Nürnberger Goldschmiedekunst 2007, hallmark number 19, makers mark number 1144). 32 x 30 x 13.5 cm. 1542 grams. Drinking vessels in the form of animals enjoyed great popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries. They were decorative pieces as well as being used for special occasions. Their design often indicated their intended use and location. Stag goblets like this were often seen in hunting lodges. Provenance: Baurat P. J. Manz Collection, Stuttgart, no. 1296 (R. 4111 a).
