Anton Wilhelm Tischbein, the "Hanauer Tischbein", was the youngest brother of Johann Heinrich Tischbein the elder, whom he was strongly influenced by artistically. Tischbein enrolled at the Academy in The Hague in 1753, having been introduced to painting by his brother Johann Valentin. In 1769 he was appointed court painter by Erbprinz William of Hesse-Kassel and in 1772 he became a member of the "Hanauischen Academie der Zeichenkunst ".
His status as court painter brought Anton Wilhelm Tischbein numerous portrait commissions, including those of several wealthy citizens of the Main Region. He painted solo and family portraits from small format to life size. His painting style is characterised by the vibrancy and accuracy with which he is able to reproduce fabrics and accessories.
The unknown sitter presents himself to the viewer in the pose of a scholar. Dressed in a sumptuous costume "a la turque", he sits with his legs crossed on a porch with the view of a park landscape in the background. Seated in front of a draped curtain, the classic symbol of dignity in portraiture, his headdress lies on the table next to him, his open left hand resting between it and his smoking utensils. He holds a book in his right hand.
