Signed lower left, inscribed with place name "Roma" and dated 1856. Inscribed "Erastus Corning, Albany" verso. Oil on canvas. 74.5 x 99 cm. Restored. Minor damage to frame. Johann Jakob Frey was the son of the etcher Samuel Frey and received his first artistic education from his father. After stations in Paris and Munich, Rome became his permanent residence. There, artists like Joseph Anton Koch or Johann Christian Reinhart belonged to his circle.
