A Silver Tankard

Augsburg, 1610 - 1612, Daniel Sailer

 

Silver, gold-plated. Tapering cylindrical form with flared, round base, ear-shaped handle, scroll thumbpiece and slightly domed cover with baluster finial. Hammered, chased and embossed decoration. Rosettes enclosed within elliptical cartouches to body and lid. Engraved monograms to the base "H.S. C.E. J.E.S." and dated 1697. Hallmarked (Seling 2007, hallmark number 180, makers mark number 1140), master circa 1599, died in 1643. In addition, a hallmark with the monogram C.W.R.H. Assayers marks. Height 12.5 cm. 257 grams. A similar tankard by the goldsmith Daniel Sailer is in the collection of King Gustav V in the Royal Castle, Stockholm (Seling 1980, no. 143 with illustration).
