Joseph Stieler

1781 Mainz - 1858 Munich

Henriette Alexandrine, Archduchess of Austria, née Princess of Nassau-Weilburg

Signed and dated 1820 lower right. Oil on canvas. In the octagon (oval image section): 65.5 x 52.3 cm. Craquelure. Minor restoration. Minor damage. Minor damage to frame (85 x 71 cm).

Adhesive label probably with a former inscription "Herzog Albrecht Eugen" on the stretcher. Label "I.K.H. Erzherzogin Maria Anontiata von Oesterreich", remnants of a label "[...]W [...]nthum [...]2a" (probably "H.M.v.W. Privat-Eigenthum", i. e. Duchess Margarete Sophie von Württemberg, née Archduchess of Austria), label "Erbschaft Hzg. Albrecht Eugen v. Württ." with number 130 on the frame verso.

Based on the labels verso, the provenance could be: Archduchess Henriette Alexandrine / Archduke Karl of Austria-Teschen. - Their firstborn: Archduchess Maria Theresia Isabella, later Queen of Naples-Sicily. - Their daughter: Princess Maria Annunciata of Naples-Sicily, later Archduchess of Austria (wife of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria, the painting is verifiable as her ownership by the label mentioned). - Their daughter: Archduchess Margarete Sophie of Austria, later Duchess and Crown Princess of Württemberg (ownership can be verified by the remnants of an inventory label). - Their son: Albrecht Eugene Duke of Württemberg (verifiable by labels).
