A Faience Tankard
Nuremberg, mid-18th Century
Faience. Pewter cover and base with Nuremberg hallmark. Ear-shaped handle reinforced with pewter. Polychrome decoration on yellow ground: the front with an oval cartouche enclosing a baroque scene with a view onto a garden, also featuring a winged heart into which a hand emerging from the clouds pours a liquid from a jug beneath the motto "Patere Ut Potiare Petito". Base inscribed H. G. 9307 and 149. Handle restored. Height 22 cm. Provenance: Igo Levi Collection, Lucerne. Weinmüller Auction 81, 12 April 1962, lot number 151, plate 88.
