AN OPEN FACE GOLD POCKET WATCH
Paris, circa 1785, FERDINAND BERTHOUD;
18K three-colour gold, tested. Dial and movement signed Ferdinand Berthoud. Makers marks. The minute hand has been replaced. The winding key is missing.
Diameter circa 4.3 cm. Circa 67.4 g.
White enamel dial with painted black Arabic numerals, outer minute indications. Gilt unmatched hands. Fusee verge movement. Pierced and engraved balance bridge.
Ferdinand Berthoud was born in 1727 in Switzerland. He moved to Paris in 1747, where he became a master watchmaker in 1754. In 1786 he was appointed resident watchmaker to the king.
