description:

A SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND SET RING

Germany, 1970s;

Platinum, tested. 8 brilliant and baguette-cut diamonds, altogether circa 2 carats, TCR-CR (I-K), VS-P1. 1 intense blue coloured soft cushion-cut sapphire with slight colour change (blue in daylight to violet-blue in artificial light) circa 10 carats (calculated weight), bright, intense deep blue colour.

Ring size: EU 50, UK K 1/2, US 5 1/2. Circa 13.18g.

Pleochroism, i.e. the difference in colour observed in artificial light in comparison to daylight, occurs in many gemstones. However, the effect is not usually as pronounced as can be observed in the present sapphire. Alexandrite is most renowned for this phenomenon. The most extreme examples appear emerald green in daylight but bright red in artificial light.

Such clear pleochroism is very sought after and is therefore reflected in the price.
