A Star-Shaped Diamond Pendant
Vienna, circa 1870
14K gold (585/-) and silver, tested. Viennese assay marks from after 1867, makers marks SR. 1 old-brilliant-cut diamond of circa 2.2 carats, TCA (L), P1. 58 diamonds in various old-cuts, altogether circa 3 carats. The brooch pin is slightly bent.
Circa 4.8 x 3.8 cm. Circa 8.60 g.

The pendant is in very good condition, considering its age. The pendant bale can be unhooked and removed. A pin fastening that is stored separately in the case can be screwed on, allowing the star to be worn not only as a pendant but also as a brooch.
Star-shaped diamond brooches and pendants are very famous in Austria. Empress Sisi owned at least twenty-seven such stars. She is portrayed wearing one of them in her famous portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter, which was painted in 1865. The stars vary in appearance: some being eight pointed and others ten pointed, additionally some examples are set not only with diamonds but also with pearls in the middle.
