BRACELET WITH MICROMOSAIC DECORATION
Italy, circa 1860
18K yellow gold, tested. Marks. Micromosaic. Small losses to the micromosaic of a bouquet of flowers.
Circa 5.5 x 4.7 cm (Oval); Inner circumference: circa 16.5 cm. Circa 49.19 g.
The micromosaic elements depict three doves carrying olive branches, as well as, two swans and a vase of flowers. While in antiquity the dove with an olive branch was considered a symbol of peace, its symbolism in Christian iconography extended to the bond between God and man. The swan and the vase of flowers can be interpreted as symbols of love and loyalty. Taking this into account, the bangle can certainly be considered as having been a wedding gift.
With regard to the excellent execution, it can be assumed that the piece of jewelery came out of one of the famous workshops of Rome, the most famous of which being that of Fortunato Pio Castellani (1794-1865).
