A Carved Ivory Brooch surrounded by Pearls
Flanders, 17th Century, setting later
18K yellow gold (750/-), tested. Circa 63 small freshwater pearls. Ivory panel with carved relief.
Circa 3.68 x 6.35 cm. Circa 27.6 g.
Accompaniments: Case.
The relief depicts either Venus in a clam shell or Aphrodite with cupids, who are playing with a dolphin and a horse. The ivory carver based his design on the works of Italian masters of the 17th century, such as Agostino Carracci, who were in close contact with Flemish artists and whose ideas are also reflected in this relief.
