A Reliquary Cross Pendant

Probably Spain, circa 1620

18K yellow gold (750/-), tested. 11 rectangular-cut rock crystals. 3 small cultured pearls. Dark blue, white and red enamel. A few stones slightly nicked. Enamel chipped.

Circa 5.7 x 3.3 cm. Circa 13.1 g.

Accompaniments: Case.

The cross consists of three parts: a simple cross set with 7 rock crystals, which is applied to a base cross cut from thick gold sheet that is decorated at the ends of the beams with pearls and enamel. The underside consists of a hinged cross plate. It conceals seven compartments, in which small relics can be kept.

A very similar reliquary cross pendant is located in the Kunstgewerbemuseum in Cologne.
